Around 200 alpaca will come under the judges scrutiny in a new competition for both the Waikato Show and the region’s alpaca breeders.
The new competition is where classes are defined by age with a supreme awarded in each colour group.
There will be many supremes on offer over six colours with exhibitors/competitors coming from Christchurch, Auckland, Hawkes Bay, Whangarei, Warkworth, Bay of Plenty, Levin, Taumaranui as well as local Waikato people.
Being judged on Friday will be 130 fleeces, the largest colour fleece display in the North Island behind the national show.
The alpaca animal competition is on the Saturday with three judges – two from Christchurch one from Australia – running their knowing eyes over the animals. Dam and cria (mother and child) classes will be in the public ring.
One of the organisers, Julie Mansell said, “Along with trade sites showcasing alpaca products, there will be; felting demonstrations, opportunities to lead an alpaca, children’s competitions over the three days, a chance to get your photo with an alpaca and talks on alpacas (on Sunday).”
